Product, Production, and the Plastic Proletariat: What is the Photographic Opportunity?
“A child being beaten” (Freud’s “Ein Kind wird Geschlagen”) is the ultimate phantasy of photography. The light beats the emulsion, leaves its marks on it – but these are non-penetrating, non-piercing marks. They teach a lesson and fix the surface in accordance with this or that form of reality. Yet they never pose an actual danger, never destroy or annihilate. It seems that it is the very non-penetrating nature of the photographic touch which is the main issue under attack in the exhibition “Photo Op.” The opportunity in question is first and foremost the one given to light – to settle the score against the surface, against the material. It is no longer an educational touch, which may hurt yet poses no real danger. Here, the surface – the paper, the film – is crumpled, pricked, pierced, broken, and burned. Light turns into fire and becomes dangerous.
By Kant’s definition, this is indeed true enlightenment: exiting childhood and daring to know. The photograph is no longer a child being beaten but rather a responsible adult, who may be punctured, burned and killed (or, to be precise, one who inflicts all of the above on himself). In exchange, it gets knowledge: photography becomes aware of the process by which it is produced, which is usually carried out behind its back. In fact, according to the Kantian model of enlightenment, true knowledge – such as is worthy of risk taking – would be an answer to the question of how do children come into the world; it is knowledge about conditions of possibility, or about the ways by which the given is indeed given.
These are the two key principles in the exhibition. On the one hand, making the very process of production present, turning it into a process which is given and presented to the viewer’s eye rather than one which hides behind the flat object’s back; on the other hand, effecting the surface’s distortion and disintegration and thereby turning it into a locus which contains, at one and the same time, presence and void, negative and positive, product and production. What is the relation these two principles bear to each other – the plastic principle, which depicts the phenomenology of the photographic touch, and the economic principle, which undermines the distinction between product and production? The exhibition presents them as identical. To be exact, the former serves as the latter’s means. If the viewer is not to encounter the final stage in the production process (as one does in ordinary exhibitions) but rather the process incarnate, then the calm, stable presence of the product – that is, the finished artistic object – must be undercut by accentuating the traces its production has left on it. This is precisely the purpose of the distortion, burning, and piercing of the surface. They are vestiges by which the excessive penetration of the production into the calm readiness of the product is perpetuated.
Yet this correspondence between the two principles is perhaps the very thing which the exhibition’s critical gaze aims to question. First, we must note that the penetrating, destructive touch is present in the exhibition in two different modes: in the objects themselves (broken glass, crumpled paper) and as photographic images of objects. In the latter case, the penetration turns into a non-penetrating trace on the surface, and this is how the production excess is perpetuated. Such undercutting of the equation “production = penetration” is the first step in a process at the end of which this imperialist war may turn into a civil war. For the conflict between product and production, process and endpoint – the defining conflict in both thought and art over the last two centuries – is a full-blown imperialist war. Each of the warring sides tries to take over the entire world, to subjugate reality in its entirety. But the true source of power, of production and product alike, is the proletariat of the plastic touch. The war between product and production is one between penetration (which inflates, crumples, and pierces) and conjugation (which touches without destroying, leaves its marks without penetrating). But must penetration and conjugation indeed fight this war, which may not even be their own? Could not the proletariat on both sides of the front line unite forces against their exploiters and declare war on both product and production, on the entire economic system in which product and production are the foundation stones or the underlying notions that determine the bounds of reality?
Beyond the question of how do children come into the world, which forever confines us to the bounds of the relationship between creator, created, and the medium in which they meet, lies the question of true enlightenment – that is, who’s against whom. The opportunity to realize this is possibly the most important opportunity which the exhibition offers us. Henceforth, the road is already paved toward new questions – about the nature of truly free art.
